One Match At A Time

One match at a time. That has been my saving grace. Let’s talk about it.

I have long been a fan of rituals. And because I have chosen a profession {and life} that often puts me deep into human misery, I need every advantage I can get. Working in mental health, homelessness, crisis, and death and dying my entire life, I seek solitude. But solitude without a calm mind can be a self imposed Hell. So I spark.

Smudging is a sacred act to me. Both my wife and I are big into it. Our entire house is lined with candles, and our space get smudged almost everyday. I also am never far from incense matches. Good for a smudge on the go. And because I often encounter people on the worst days of their lives, I need a minute {and a smudge} to get my head right.

What is your go to? I assume {and could be wrong}, that many people aren’t even in tune with clearing their space. And by space I mean, their head space and physical surroundings. I cannot lie. I sometimes get some very strange looks when someone sees me in my car smudging myself. And you know what? I continue to smudge. That is “me” time. And even if it’s only for a brief moment, I am in tune with all that there is. I reset. I am grateful.

The world can be both beautiful and cold. And for those cold occasions, I am resurrected one match at a time.
