Preface
You are allowed to break. You are allowed to feel broken. You are even allowed to lose your shit. What you are not allowed to do is, give up. This is not the end of your story. It is the beginning. All that has happened before was the preface. Get into that mindset. Stop thinking of the past. Think of bigger goals. Don’t react. Attack!
I’ve worked with thousands of people over the last 39 years. I’ve spent a fair amount of time working with our military. I’ve held the dying, listened to the incarcerated, and fought alongside the addict. Do you want to know who makes it? Those who attack. That is it. That is all.
Case in point. Working in the addiction field for as long as I have, I started getting hip to this early on. I worked inside of top tier treatment centers. You know, the kind that it cost 40k just to walk through the door. The flip side of that is, the state run facilities. Where you are basically given a bed and some bread. The outcomes were the same. Sure, the 40k center made the client feel more comfortable. But if someone isn’t ready to change, baby, it ain’t going to happen.
I have worked with professionals who have sent people to rehab 10 different times in 2 years. Fucking 10! This literally takes a bed away from someone who is willing to put the work in. Does the 10 times in 2 years client deserve to get clean? Absolutely! But they need to work at their recovery harder than the professional. Much harder. Anything less is enabling.
So where are you at today? Feeling broken and losing your mind? That’s okay. Take a minute for yourself. The preface is over. Grab your pen and start writing. Yes, there will be some dark days in your future. But know this. If you don’t allow the darkness into your mind, you’re going to win.
