Rich Man Poor Man

I’ve been a rich man, and I’ve been a poor man. And neither one of them had anything to do with money. Come on, take the journey with me…

I know what it is like to have a ton of cash. I also know what it is like to be so in debt, that I couldn’t breathe. But I am older now. And while money provides me with options, it in no way makes me feel rich. It’s been a brutal week. Last night I came home to my wife waiting for me at the door {a nightly occurrence}, and that makes me rich. Rich because, after 2 decades of being together, she is both the first and last thing I see when I leave the house. More importantly, neither one of us would have it any other way. Love. It’s love that makes me rich.

We live in a modest little house. We’ve had huge custom made houses in the past before. At one point, we owned 7 houses in 3 different states. {Who needs that?} Today we love our little home. Sure we could upgrade again. But we don’t. We opt to travel every month. What we spend on our monthly getaway, would certainly be more than enough to upgrade. We already live in a sleepy little beach town. We are just 5 minutes from 5 different beaches. We’re good.

I have a clean heart. Sure there are things that I wish I could go back and undo. I can’t. But my heart is clean because I live a pure life. I cheer for people. I have worked in the helping profession my entire life. My wife and I actively look for people and charities that we could bless, or bring value to. We’re doing pretty good money wise. But it is the spiritual life that makes us rich.

So yeah, money is cool. But you know what is cooler? Helping someone that you don’t know. Surrounding yourself with people that don’t look or act like you. Keeping an open mind. Stop thinking that the world is out to get you. That is what is cool. Not only that. It’s incredibly sexy. And being rich…trust me that money has nothing to do with it.
